    Traditions & lore

What makes Albert Park Circuit feel like more than another race weekend.

    The season opener

Melbourne has opened the F1 season more often than any other venue in the modern era. The Australian Grand Prix moved from Adelaide to Albert Park in 1996, and from that year through 2019 the race kicked off the championship 23 times out of 24.

    The park circuit

Albert Park is a semi-permanent circuit that wraps around a lake in the middle of Melbourne. The surface is used as public roads outside of race weekends, which is why it traditionally evolves so dramatically across the three days — dusty on Friday, properly grippy by Sunday.
