The F1 Points System, Explained
Formula 1 decides its Drivers' and Constructors' World Championships with a points system. Here's exactly how points are earned each race weekend and how they stack up across a season.
Grand Prix (Sunday race) points
The top 10 finishers of every Grand Prix score points. Drivers outside the top 10 earn zero points for that race.
| Finishing Position | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 25 |
| 2nd | 18 |
| 3rd | 15 |
| 4th | 12 |
| 5th | 10 |
| 6th | 8 |
| 7th | 6 |
| 8th | 4 |
| 9th | 2 |
| 10th | 1 |
Sprint race points
A handful of weekends feature a shorter Saturday "sprint" race. The top 8 finishers score points:
| Sprint Position | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 8 |
| 2nd | 7 |
| 3rd | 6 |
| 4th | 5 |
| 5th | 4 |
| 6th | 3 |
| 7th | 2 |
| 8th | 1 |
Championships & tiebreakers
Drivers' Championship: each driver's race and sprint points add up across the season. The driver with the most points at the end of the final Grand Prix is World Champion.
Constructors' Championship: every point scored by either of a team's drivers counts toward the team's total. The team with the highest total wins the Constructors' title.
Ties: if two drivers or teams end on equal points, the tiebreaker is who has more best finishes — most wins first, then most 2nd-place finishes, and so on.
Shortened races: if a race is red-flagged early and can't resume, reduced points may be awarded based on how much of the scheduled distance was completed.
