    Traditions & lore

What makes Marina Bay Street Circuit feel like more than another race weekend.

    F1's first night race

The 2008 Singapore Grand Prix was the first championship race held entirely at night. Around 1,500 light fixtures around the circuit produce conditions broadcasters describe as brighter than a typical daytime race — engineered to be camera-flat and free of glare for the drivers.

    Crashgate

The inaugural 2008 race was won by Fernando Alonso in a Renault, but the result is now infamous as Crashgate: a year later, evidence emerged that Renault had instructed Alonso's team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash deliberately to bring out a safety car and hand Alonso the victory.

The hardest race on the calendar

Singapore is consistently the most physically demanding race of the season — 90% humidity, 30°C+ ambient temperatures, two hours of constant heavy braking on a tight street circuit. Drivers routinely lose 3–4 kg of bodyweight across the race.
