Motul Petit Le Mans — the IMSA season finale

    Storylines to watch

The title comes down to Road Atlanta again

As the eleventh and final round of the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Petit Le Mans is once more positioned to decide the GTP crown. In each of the last three years the championship has been settled here — often by a car that didn’t win the race itself.

Cadillac defends the race it has owned lately

The No. 31 Cadillac of Aitken, Bamber and Vesti won the 2025 running, and Cadillac now has five Petit Le Mans wins — the most of any manufacturer in the modern era. The marque arrives as the form pick at a circuit that has suited the V-Series.R.

    Porsche brings the reigning champions

The No. 7 Porsche 963 of Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet took the 2025 GTP Drivers’ Championship, finishing third in the race while sealing the title. Porsche Penske Motorsport returns as the team to beat on points even when the trophy goes elsewhere.

    Traditions & lore

What makes Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta feel like more than another race weekend.

The season finale — and the title decider

Petit Le Mans has closed the championship year for almost its entire history, repeatedly settling the title at the flag.

For essentially its whole modern history Petit Le Mans has been the last race of the year — first as the American Le Mans Series finale, now as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship finale. Because it comes last, it is repeatedly a championship decider.

That produces one of endurance racing's quirks: the car that wins the race often isn't the car that wins the title. In 2022 Blomqvist and Jarvis clinched the DPi crown by winning, but in 2023, 2024 and 2025 the GTP Drivers' Championship was settled at Road Atlanta even though the title-winning car didn't win the race.

Is Petit Le Mans the IMSA season finale?

Yes. Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is the traditional finale of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, run in October. Because it closes the season it is frequently a title decider — and the championship-winning car often finishes behind the race winner on the day.

A “little Le Mans” by design

Created in 1998 in collaboration with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, the race is a deliberate American homage to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Petit Le Mans was created in 1998 by Road Atlanta owner Don Panoz in collaboration with the Automobile Club de l'Ouest — the same body that runs the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That partnership is the literal origin of the name ("little Le Mans") and the race's direct connection to the French enduro.

The ACO link is what spun the American Le Mans Series out of this event, and the Le Mans-style multi-class format — prototypes and GT cars sharing the track — has been the race's identity from the start.

Road Atlanta and the run into the night

A fast, hilly 2.54-mile course defined by its downhill esses, run from afternoon into darkness over ten hours.

Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is a 2.54-mile, twelve-turn permanent road course defined by significant elevation changes and high-speed sections — its signature being the downhill esses and the blind, cresting final corner.

The 10-hour format (historically 10 hours or 1,000 miles, whichever came first) means the race runs from afternoon into full darkness. Weather has been a recurring character: in 2015 a GT Porsche won overall for the first time ever after the race was halted at eight hours amid heavy rain, darkness and hydroplaning.
